Instead of locking threads, what do you guys think about instead just deleting all the bad comments?
I had a thread that had lots of good stuff in it, until some people started posting stupid shit. That resulted in the thread being locked. So now I can't comment in it.
With the thread locked, the stupid shit is still posted, and still being indexed by google/yahoo/bing. If comments are bad enough to lock a thread, I think they should be purged from the internet altogether.

That one that says "From my cold dead hands..... will require a background check"

When its time to go in: That place of steel and stone. I pray that you will keep me safe, so I will not walk alone. Help me to do my duty, please watch me on my rounds. Amongst those perilous places and slamming steel door sounds. God, keep my fellow Officers well and free from harm. Let them know I'll be there too, whenever there's alarm. Above all when I walk my beat, no matter where I roam. Let me go back whence I came, to family and home Author unknown.
Oh-Oh. I sense a "feel the power" moment coming on.
LOL I hope your sarcasm was a counterpoint to my own. There is a LOT of room for joking about "authority" and "power"... and that is all it would ever be from my viewpoint. Humor.
I was picturing being in a basement, being fed through a small sliding door, the only source of light being the glow of multiple computer monitors... Poor little PMB watching and reading every thread, weighing the rightness and wrongness of each...
Then we'd finally have a website without wrongness in it. Because god knows, admin and moderators don't make mistakes.

Exactly. Sometimes you will see a lock down happen, and then a cleanup later and re-open. And sometimes, the thread goes so far down the hill it is completely unrecoverable. It's a case by case basis.

^ This guy is no fun. Comes in here laying down the law like Eric Cartman
Who the hell made him the boss anyway?
Admin Edit: Hi Mike. Still want to go to SHOT?
What I meant to say was that mods make plenty of mistakes, but I have yet to see an error or oversight made by an Admin. And that I will continue to follow all orders that are Constitutionally Cool.
Admin Edit : You're a good boy Mike.
