We have received quite a few complaints about peoples pics that are uploaded via a hosting site that are waaaaaaay too big. The site does a decent job of re-sizing some (attachments etc), but the hosted pics are set via the remote site.
So yes, we chose 1024, which is still pretty damn wide.
What I do is use the URL/IMG code that most sites provide. This way you can have a decent sized picture, but the viewer can click it for a even BIGGER version.
