Hi folks,

Idaho resident here. I visit and drive through Washington from time to time, and also up to Canada. Just found this site and will review it periodically to stay current on Washington gun laws and other misc. topics.

Also, had a specific question about the border crossing at Oroville / Osoyoos on Rte 97. But will try to figure out the right thread for it.

Welcome to WaGuns!

I'm jealous . . . I need to retire and GTFO to some place like Idaho. What kind of shooting do you do? (Please don't say "anything I want" because that will just make it hurt more.)

I'd start a thread in General Discussion, or just ask it here. GD will get more people to see it.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the kind welcome. Since you asked, here's about me, and about Idaho:

I don't shoot as often as I'd like, but have the usual small assortment of pistols. Colt Series 70 1911, Ruger 22/45, S&W Model 66, Sig P238. Idaho enhanced concealed carry permit holder. A couple shotguns for birds and sporting clays. Just built my first AR. And I made a second lower, and so just waiting for my budget to get to the point where I can complete it. Seems like every guy I run into either has an AR, or several, or wants one. Maybe it's just me.

Boise is a small city, with amazing cultural stuff, Boise State University, and the capitol. It's left-leaning/liberal/anti-gun/democrat unfortunately, and my state representative is one of the very few Democrats in the legislature. Such folks are, however, vastly outnumbered by conservative/libertarian folks just outside of Boise and in the rest of the state. Boise has a tiny downtown surrounded by neighborhoods. There is no "bad part" of town. No inner city/ghetto/barrio.

In Boise, there are several outdoor ranges--actually not in Boise, but in Nampa, Emmett, some of the outlying places. Out east in the desert is Black's Creek Rifle and Pistol range that is quite something. Some guys grouse about all the rules and hours of operation, but it is quite the place. Nampa Rifle and Pistol Club has a great range. Indoors, I shoot at Impact Guns store. 25 yard range. bout 16 lanes. Not fancy. Nice gun shop attached. They have good deals. One of the best things about Boise is Boise Gun store. They are one of the biggest--by far--gun sellers in the country. Amazing for such a small place. Used to be you walked in there and you could hardly walk around for all the firearms, boxes, ammo, other gear stacked and shelved everywhere. They've cleaned the place up a bit since then, but still a fun place.

Boise has some really good gun stores. HawkTech is one that caters to Ruger 10/22 and AR afficianados. They helped me with my AR build a LOT. Fixed some things, gave me great advice and never charged me for it. Dan Hawkins is the owner. He and his guys are nice folks.

Yep, Idaho is a gun-friendly state, and I love living here. Been here since 1983; Was an Ohio refugee, fleeing bad weather and political oppression. 8 1/2 years in the USAF, at F.E. Warren in Cheyenne and Davis-Monthan in Tucson, then to Boise, to work for Hewlett-Packard. Now retired.

Idaho (Boise/Meridian area) is the home of Gemtech, Odin Works, Eberlestock, and I believe many other manufacturers of gun stuff. I bought my Odin Works .223 Wylde barrel, then had a question about something, so I drove over to their place and went in and just asked them. Good people.

If you're on this forum, I highly recommend Idaho. Move here. If you're a liberal from California or wherever, you wouldn't want to move here. It's way too cold. Snows here all the time. Bad weather. No culture. No sophistication. Bunch or rural yahoos and cowboys run the state. You wouldn't be happy here. Don't move here.

That's probably more than you want to know.

And one more thing:

I find myself enjoying damn near everywhere I go in Idaho. However if I could ever talk the wife into it, I'd be heading to the Idaho Falls area.

That's what I like to hear! If I don't move back to Texas to retire, then Idaho it is!
