can anyone help me.
I just got a set of Dawson sights. I installed the rear sight with 0 issue but I can't get the front sight out. It doesn't want to move in either direction. The punch that came with the sight is now getting damaged as well as the sight itself but it has not moved at all.
any other way to get the sight out? If it has to be cut out, anyone in the area do that?
Thanks

The XD front sights are really hard to do without the actual sight tool. when done with a punch it is expected to damage the sight itself. I have had to cut the sights out. You can try and soak it in penetrating oil over night and try it again with the punch.

No problem, If you do have to cut it off be very careful. you also dont have to cut completely through the sight to be able to hammer it out. that avoids cutting into the slide as well.

so the sight tool snapped the end of the front sight completely off. So now I have what is left of the dovetail stuck in the space where the sight should go. Is there a gunsmith around that will cut the rest of the sight out?
I am not going to attempt it now with the luck I have with this damn thing.

A very common problem. Freeze it. Seriously. If you have access to LN2 (liquid nitrogen), even better. Metal contracts when cold, thus relieving the tension that holds the front sights to the slider. Do this in addition to using the special tool. Don't use a punch, Bubba.

I stopped bothering to use the sight tool to remove them. I've bent the handle on the tool... which says right on it that it's not for factory sights. I just get permission from the customer to basically beat the hell out of the factory sights and give them a few good whacks with a steel punch and a 16oz ball peen hammer. I make sure to hit the base and not the part sticking up whenever possible to reduce the chance of the sight breaking. So far so good. They are dinged, but nobody so far has cared. They just want them off and whatever better sights installed.

Absolutely, go with James, he did a great job on mine, didn't cost a huge chunk of change and turn around time was a week and a half when I did it. My XD was the only one I gave up on and sent out.....
