Personally, rarely find a pleasant outcome when I enter already pissed off into a discussion about a poor business transaction. Doesn't stop me from being a jerk sometimes... Just did it a few days ago. I have a review about an online gun seller to post soon. Ok, this is really very common for me. What I said... Yeah, can be taken exactly that way. But what I would actually DO, in that situation, pretty much exactly what you said. I'd take them back to the same guy. With a smile, I'd ask him to cut the cable. When he found out that it ruined the cutters and the cutters are not supposed to be used for steel... I'd ask him why he recommended them. I'd probably ask enough questions to back him into a corner about how he didn't really know what he was talking about, but i'd leave him plenty of room to escape that and save face as well. (Bottom line, he would know that he had been wrong, and that I let him off.) And then I'd Say something along the lines of could he try again to find me a pair of the ones that we knew worked. If he couldn't or wouldn't I'd ask for my money back, and be done with it. Bottom line, you can stand your ground on these things, and still be nice about it. Just saying that I would 'demand' it, is simply an easy way to say it without having to write a novella about it. As I just have...

Yeah, I think I need to choose my words more carefully, even when I am trying to say something without writing a novella. LOL

So allow me to summarize your advice, Jeff:
I should go in to the store and find the guy, stand on the counter and drop trou to show him my "cable" and threaten to give HIM a circumcision with the Channel Lock clippers if he doesn't refund my money?
Does that about cover it?

Does that about cover it? Well, standing on the counter might be a bit over the top, but yeah, you got it about right!

Unsolicited advice : Don't ignore a lifetime of safety advice to save 10 seconds. I won't post the flip-off finger pic to illustrate my point. Just wait for the saw blade to stop.

Regarding jukk's dilemma, McClendon's lost a lot of quality people when they sold to a Memphis retail group a couple of years ago...and employees that are still there are complaining about things they used to carry no longer being there.
Store managers care more about their own bottom line & job, rather than employees or customers...

What he said ^.
But... I went back to McClendon's today... spoke with the tool guy that's been there forever. Told him "We both made a mistake and I thought I'd share with you what I learned so maybe you don't stub your toe in the future." Told him the cable cutters cut only aluminum and copper and that I owna share of that mistake.
He thanked me and told me to go get a refund. All is good and I didn't have to show my tally-whacker to anyone.
