So after my dad passed a few years ago I was going thru some of his shit. I found some target / bullseye grips for a K frame that were just so so. Was going to toss them because the Smith model 19 was one of Bill Jordans personal guns given to him by S&W and then Bill gave it to my dad in 1964 with a birthday card. Yes I found the birthday card … and S&W letter that confirmed it was a gift to Bill. I put the original grips back on it so these ugly ass target grips were going in the trash A few weeks ago I thought on a whim to take the target grips to a wood guy and asked him to clean them up. Boy did he. Turns out they are birdseye maple and valued at about 400 bucks from the mid 1960's .. they came out beautiful So the before picture in the case on the model 19 circa 1970.( with scope) .and the after photos from yesterday http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp23 ... kvzxpj.jpg[/img]

Cool story.
Lesson - never throw out something old, unique, and handmade from decades ago. It's probably worth something to someone. And sometimes worth a LOT of money.
Those grips will buy a new pistol!

Before that happens, hand over all that old gun trash in the case to me so I can clean them up and shoot them.

PW45 wrote: What's the story/history with the Case/badges/handguns? Oh..just some of my dads stuff.. Seattle PD 1962-1995..I have them all..and there were actually 6 cases like this. Most of the badges ( over 600) I was able to track down sons and daughters if the badges were numbered, and get them to next of kin..with shitloads of thank you letters in return....some that did not have numbers or departments that recycled numbers, and I could not find children or grand children I still have ..I have this one Texas Ranger badge from pre 1940's number #26 that was issued to a Ranger but no known surviving offspring..so that sits in a drawer..and after 9/11 it is a felony to have NYPD badges..so they sit in a drawer also..one NYPD detective badge 1st class, I was able to track down and his son is now a NYPD capt. I did send him his dads badge..he sent me shitloads of NYPD stuff and a great thank you note on his dept letterhead. \

Now that is just too awesome of a story!
To save you googlers,
"Bird's eye Maple is a sugar maple. The figure is reportedly caused by unfavorable growing conditions for the tree. The Sugar Maple attempts to start numerous new buds to get more sunlight, but with poor growing conditions the new shoots are aborted, and afterward a number of tiny knots remain. Birdseye Maple is frequently sold in veneer form, but solid lumber is available as well. Being tiny knots, the birdseye figure is most noticeable and pronounced on flatsawn pieces of lumber."

Great story, munchie! It's good to hear from you, man. How's Arizona treating you? Or maybe I should ask . . . how are you treating Arizona?
