Coyotes and Looking for a Predator Caller

Wed Dec 07, 2016 9:14 am

Ok, wife texts me this morning and says two coyotes in the yard and she doesn't feel safe letting the dogs out.

Background:
I live on 5.5 acres in Snohomish. Neighbors to the West, East, and South. North side of my property borders DNR (3000 acres worth). Due to the recent snow and cold weather I believe the coyotes are getting desperate and coming closer to the house. I have one large and two medium dogs who will bark and if let out will probably chase down the coyotes. Definitely don't want that to happen. Neighbors have already lost dogs and cats in the last month so I will need to do some exterminating. I do have my small game license so I'm good to go there.

Question:

Who here has used an electronic predator call? Recommendations?
What's the best way to get these coyotes in close?

Got any guts you can leave out?

Sounds like getting them in close is the least of your worries.

I use a cheap Foxpro electronic caller with a remote. When they yotes are in sight, I use mouse and vole squeeks. If they are at a longer range and not coming closer, I use a kitten call for suburban coyotes, or a puppy in distress. Generally brings them trotting close enough for the AR to bark at them.

No guts dreadi.... that would be considered "baiting".
Downward angle shots work well, if you get a pass through it hits the dirt. I use archery equipment. I've whacked 3 coyotes out of the field across from my house. Unincorporated pierce county so technically I could shoot but also had neighbors.
You need to fool their eyes & nose when hunting but these sound pretty bold. They get dumb when they're bold. I've used a rabbit mouth call. Worked just fine. Sounds corny but howl with your mouth first then blow the rabbit call & they usually come charging in to steal that rabbit from the "stranger" that has trespassed into their territory.
The electronic calls work well too but remember that they're very loud they're best used in big open areas if you really got them in that close and tight you don't need to be that loud it's better to be quieter and unseen that's where a mouth call or a mouse squeak or some of these other things work a little better you gotta remember these coyotes do their killing and eating in privacy they don't want a huge audience to know what they're up to most of these hunting videos are filmed in Wyoming or Kansas where it's a million Acres of open territory so you really have to get that sound to travel out to reach to them.
Shotguns do a # on coyotes too, with the right load. I like #4buck.
You won't be keeping that pelt though. Again downward angle & relatively close range shotguns work extremely well.

I have an electronic call if you want to borrow it Bo. I have not been successful in the field (have not spent much time) but locally in the neighborhood the coyote pup and serenade has pulled them close. I run it on Halloween as the dog sounds are pretty creepy to the kids, neighbor said he saw a pair 2 yards down this year just after 9pm.

Thanks for the offer Ty and everyone else who has responded.

Been looking at calls all morning and I think I'm going to go Plan "B" for now since I already have the equipment. I'm going to use iHunt (iPhone app by Ruger) which has all sorts of calls and a Motorola Bluetooth Speaker that my wife has. This will hopefully bring them in close for the shot. Hopefully will have pictures soon :)

Well I just re-read the regs & did some Google fu...
Looks like you CAN bait coyotes in Wash.... No bait for bears or cougars but apparently for coyotes it's ok?
I stand corrected Mr.Dreadi sir.
I always understood it was no bait here across the board, but technically coyotes are not considered a game species.

Good luck, post some pictures

There's nothing in the regs saying you can't bait cougar. It does explicitly say that you can't bear over bait.

300blk with subsonics and a can will do the trick. nice and quiet like too. lots of callers have been mentioned. If you know they are in the area you might be able to get some of those distress calls on your cellphone and play them max volume as well. IT will not have the range of a rel caller, but if they are close...

What's bringing them in now? Maybe make more of THAT available?

Personally, I wouldn't doubt dreadly....

I fear if I do, he would be on here asking how to tan the hide of a fat, pasty white guy.....

Bigger fear....you all would tell him how......
