My In-Laws have a winery/cidery on 180 acres near the mouth of the Columbia River Gorge, just east of Washougal. Sitting here in my ground blind on my first blacktail hunt. Got doe estrus placed out in front of me, as well as some apples from the cider apple orchard scattered around. I'm a complete rookie at this. I'm wondering if I should go to Sportsman's Warehouse and pick up a set of those rattling antlers and/or a call of some kind? Does rattling/calling even work for blacktail? The GMU that I'm in allows harvest of any deer, buck or doe. I'd be perfectly happy with either as I'm really just on this hunt for the meat. The GMU is also firearms restricted. (No rifles). I'm using a smoothbore 12ga with 1oz rifled slugs, so, hoping to get a shot between 50-75 yds. Here's the view out my blind window: Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks, -Breck Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

The game camera caught this spike last night, so there's at least one buck in the area. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Good luck, the black tail on the wet side are pretty much nocturnal.
You should be in position when hunting hours open and an hour prior to close, since that's when they usually move. Otherwise, plan on waking around to find out where they bed down.
Also hunt a firearms restricted gmu, so I hunt with a crossbow and make as little noise as possible.

I would not be putting out those apples and advertising it online as baiting like that can get you into trouble. Its not like you do like I do and keep a trace mineral salt block there all the time behind the cabin but I do not hunt over it. 10 gallon limit aint very much to ad to what is on the ground and if the deer have not been eating apples you will just be giving them the scours.
"Bait" is any substance that could serve as a lure, food, or attraction for deer or elk. Except as otherwise provided in this section, it is unlawful to hunt for deer and elk using any type of bait placed, exposed, deposited, distributed, scattered, or otherwise used for the purpose of attracting deer or elk with the intent to hunt them, if the volume of bait accessible to wildlife exceeds 10 gallons. Bait sites of an individual license holder cannot be placed within 200 yards from another known bait site or another bait site of the same license holder. Exceptions: Hunting on or over the following is not considered an unlawful use of bait while hunting deer or elk: • Locally common agricultural and ranching practices including salt or mineral distribution, and feeding; • Food that is available from undisturbed wild, volunteer, or planted vegetation; including fruit trees, orchards, vineyards, and food plots; • Scents used for cover and attractant that are not consumed by animals; • Naturally occurring mineral deposits; or • As authorized by a department permit issued to address a management objective. • Exceptions do not include accidental or intentional spills, dumping, or storage of agricultural produce, feed, or bait. A violation of this section is punishable as an infraction under RCW 77.15.160 if no animal has been shot or killed and RCW 77.15.410 Unlawful hunting of big game—Penalty, if an animal has been shot or killed.

Go pickup a set of Regs if you do not believe me.

Yup, can't bait bear in Washington, but you can sure as hell bait deer and elk.

I've never rattled for blacktail, primarily because the general buck season is normally well before the rut starts. I have used calls a lot, very successfully both for blacktail and muleys. Doe and fawn bleats seem to elicit the best results, especially if you can hear the deer but can't see it. Soft calls seem to arouse curiosity and get the animals to come into view.
Traditionally it seems that stand/blind hunting with a rifle is more of a whitetail game. Seems to me it is easier to pattern whitetails and intercept them. Blacktails seem to just wander around in their core areas. I wander around after them and sooner or later we end up at the same place.
Good Luck Breck, let us know how you do.

Good Luck Breck, let us know how you do. Great info. Thank you. Spent yesterday and today in the blind. Did some doe bleats and fawn bleats. Nothing yet. Going to stick it out until 5:00pm on Sunday. During the mid-day hours, I set out on foot. Didn't scare anything up. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Sounds like you are on the right track to venison, Breck. If there are a lot of cougars in your area, go easy on fawn in distress call. Coyotes and bobcats and the occasional bear are fun to see, puma not so much. Don't ask how I came up with this theory.
Keep at it, and post pics when you connect.

For late black tail hunt, doe urine and one of those flip over doe calls, works great!

Fuck. I shot a big doe tonight. About an hour before dusk on an old overgrown road with pretty thick forest on both edges. She bolted straight for the forest. Saw her about 20yds into the alders, maples, ferns, & blackberries. Took another shot and hit her again. She bolted again. In retrospect, I realize that I should've waited and let her bleed out before taking that second shot. Found the blood trail from the first shot. Then found the fur and blood from the second shot. Looked until I couldn't see anymore. Going to go out again in the morning and look until I find her. I feel pretty awful walking away from an animal that I mortally wounded.
