You're doing all the right things. Next time, bring a headlamp, extra batteries, mark your location in some manner if you have to trek back to it and it's if it's hard to find. Nothing wrong with follow up shots either.

You'll get her, Breck. Even if the rain washes down some of the blood trail, bigger drops will either remain or look like hollowed out drops with just the outline showing. Sounds like you hit her hard and found the start of the blood trail. Go out in the morning and fetch her. If you don't just walk right to her, mark the blood spots with toilet paper moving forward. If you lose the trail, go back to the last toilet paper breadcrumb and notice the general direction of travel from the preceeding last known spots. Also, it's not uncommon for a wounded deer to do a J turn or circle back, so look to the sides of the main trail too.

Just writing this got me all hyped up. Maybe next year I'll get out again.

It's going to be a long night for you, but it will work out OK. PM me if you want help with the recovery, although I bet you'll do fine. Let us know how it goes!

Do you know where you hit the doe? If you hit the gut, it's likely she would wander for a couple of hours in search of water.

You'll find her Breck. :thumbsup2: I know how you feel about not being able to finish her though.

Feeling pretty bad right about now. Looked all day. Couldn't find any more blood or any sign of where she went. Brought out some friends to help and no one was able to find any sign. Looked everywhere we could until the blackberries just wouldn't allow us to move any deeper. My hands are swollen and cut to ribbons from trying to get through the blackberries, so are my shins.

I feel pretty rough about this. Had some hard-learned lessons come from this hunt. Going to spend the months up until next season developing the hunting areas and making the property a hunting Mecca. There is a lot of game on the property. Just the game we saw while looking the doe was in impressive numbers. There are signs of huge bucks in the area. Check out this rub. The tree is shredded.

Since centerfire rifles aren't allowed in this GMU, I'm going to buy a shotgun with a rifled barrel and an optic. Thinking this might be the best tool for me for hunting this land.

At least the coyotes and black bears in the area have a good meal.

Wish I were eating doe backstrap, but I'm eating crow instead. Bummed.

Thick leather gloves, Diamondback headlamp, gaiters, machete, boots you can run in. I suggest having those on your list if you don't already own them.

You gave the search your best effort Breck, no shame in that. You'll be better prepared next year.

It happens.
The good thing, you feel bad about it. Means you try to find your kill, and don't treat it like a sport.

Talk with some archers.
Leaving a wounded animal alone for an hour or more helps, immensely.
It will stiffen up and less likely to dart quickly when encountered again.
Go back after it the next morning, no problem in cold weather. Warm weather, plan on making a night if it.
Everyone I know, if we know we got a solid hit, we will sit and unwind for a spell to let the animal lack enthusiasm to run.
