So modern firearm deer and waterfowl seasons both opened yesterday, Oct. 15th. My problem was I wanted to go goose hunting, but I had to get the wife a deer first, and there was an epic storm upon us. As soon as the storm subsided, I knew the deer would be out, so we went up the hill behind our house, on our land, and I found a giant spike for the wife to shoot. She whacked it, I packed it and racked it. That left me free to go goose hunting today, Sunday. I got a limit of 4 geese which included one with a neck and leg band. All and all a fair opening weekend.

I've been waiting to hear how Mr Thunderfuk rode out the storm.
Glad to hear from you. The maps showed your area taking a pounding.

Were the deer and geese just wandering around in a daze amidst all the destruction?
Good job sir.

Yes, we had some impressive storm cells come through. We fared way better than they did just down the coast in Oregon. Just some wind fall trees, which is a normal winter thing here.

So as far as black tail deer go on the coast. When you have significant windy wet storms it does 2 things to help find them/hunt them. They don't like being in the trees with the branches and trees dropping, so they come of the timber which concentrates them on the edges of the timber in the grassy brushy areas next to the timber. Secondly they feed less at night in bad storms so they come out more in the day light. I knew before we went up the hill that we would see some deer.

The geese come to our fields in this river valley when it storms. Also a tactical advantage I take advantage of.

Did I mention all this bounty came from our property?

When the SHTF, we are bugging in. We live on a southern facing slope, with 2 springs for water. We live in the forest, and it is full of game, large and small. The inter-tidal part of the Naselle river runs through our land, and has both fish and shellfish year round. The water fowl is a bonus at times. The timber and the sun provide all the energy you need. We can not only live off the land here. We can do it in comfort with little effort really needed.

We're very happy here, and love the life style. If the shit never hits the fan, we've lost nothing and have lived well anyway. I love being a hunter gatherer and having the ability to live with or without technology as I choose.

One last point of interest. This deer was shot with a Saiga .308 with a 168 grain AMAX match round. The AMAX bullet exploded when it hit a rib and took out the heart and damaged the lower lungs leaving a huge exit wound. The deer didn't go 10 feet. Why a Saiga with all my other choices? The .308 is a great deer round and has very little recoil in a semi-auto platform like a Saiga. This rifle lives on our Quad and gets shot a lot. It shots just over MOA out to 250 yards with Hornady match .308.

I couldn't think of a good reason to use anything else.

I'll take a picture of the bullet path through the chest tomorrow when we cut and wrap the meat. It's an impressive real life study of terminal ballistics.

It's actually mandatory to report them. They band them when they are molting and can't fly. They record their weight, size, age, time and place of banding, ect. When you kill one and report where and when it was harvested, It helps them to study their migration habits. They send you all the information of when and where the bird was tagged.

We specifically target banded birds because of their rarity. Like deer and elk hunters prefer large horns which are more rare. We actually scout flocks of ducks and geese looking for banded birds, and will try to set up and hunt where they are frequenting.
