So many coyotes hovering around but all the decent spots are in direct lines to neighbors houses.

Yesterday sitting out just before dusk enjoying some delish tacos and two coyotes went into the cow pasture to lap up calf droppings - prime spot from my porch to take them ~120 meters away. Problem is the 'backstop' is flat ground and light woods leading ~750 meters away to some houses. Eventually the local flock of canada geese chased off the coyotes.

<snip>

A few weeks ago the coyotes got 15 chickens from next door so something has to be done ...

Maybe get more geese? :thumbsup2:

If you can't safely dispatch them then a deterrent might be your best option. A couple of llamas would probably do the trick. Those bastards are very territorial. They can make the whole place unappealing for coyotes. A Maremma or two would also work.

We do have a few alpacas ... not sure if they rate up with llamas.

Will be slaughtering a bunch of chickens early next week so maybe time to put the guts to work! I can shoot from the upstairs window and can place the gut pile such that I'm shooting into the hill in the back 40. That will give me the +/- 70 degree safe zone.

If I miss I guess I'll be ringing up my Huckleberry buddies!

PS Geese : No freaking way - they are too messy. Been there done that won't do it again.

Well, conspired with the neighbor and I setup in their hay field so I had a safe fire lane well away from any houses.

Been watching that coyote and he comes around ~15 minutes before sunset like clockwork. Tonight I waited as the sun lowered (directly into my eyes) and the low mist/fog rose eerily up and wafted slowly across the field. My turkeys behind he cackling and gobbling with glee while the canada geese were well off to the right honking like fools and all the while the cattle in the next field over were chattering and grunting up a storm.

I had downloaded some coyote calls onto the phone and played a few - they are not very loud but plainly can be heard > 300 meters away as my boy verified last night.

Slowly out of the mist a shadow moves from off to the right about 350 meters out (in line with the houses I was worried about). The shadow moves haltingly further from the line of the houses into the field I'm expecting to see my friend. About 175 meters out the shadow emerges into the thinning/swirling mist no doubt it is my old friend Mr. Chicken Eating Coyote just as expected.

Mr. Coyote moves steadily now well into my 'go' zone giving me a clear broadside view. He stops, then starts, changes direction and zig zags ever closer to the fence line on the left. Once he crosses the fence on the left I will not have a shot as the woods are too thick there. He is 10 yards from the fence ... I make a chuffing sound and he stops about 170 meters out and looks my direction ... the crack of the 6.8 SPC II echos across the plain. Mr. Coyote is next seen at full speed dash back from whence he came - missed!

The cattle all come rushing over in response to the sound of the gate opening/closing as I shuffle off back to the house to explain my failure to the family.

Tomorrow night (my 53rd year on this 3rd rock from the nuclear ball of fury in the sky) and will try again.

Does a .22 have enough energy to detonate Tannerite? I thought a round with more energy was required.

Not in my experience.
.22 magnum would work.

I've seen some that says 22, other stuff says "high power rifle" whatever the hell that means.

What he said. 2lbs should do the trick and would kill and fatally injure four to five of them eating out of the gut pile
