Eight years of buying tags. Seven years of eating them. I’ve only seen four with my eyes the whole eight years.

This guy kept toying with me. He showed up on cameras while I was away, taunting me. He knew when I wasn’t around and he seemed to know which spot I was in because he’d show up on camera at my other spot. Well, I got so pissed off after having what I though was a solid plan for two days of hunting, and he kept showing up briefly at a different spot each time. Even more so I was pissed because on Saturday, some bees tried to jack my Holy YardBird and stung. Semi automatic assault bees need to be banned!

I got home grumpy with pain in my hand and a pissy attitude about this bear. My wife made me dinner and I decided to go back out early since he regularly shows up between 8am-9am in one spot. If didn’t show up by 11am, I was going to bail on bears for a couple days. 4:30am the alarm goes off, I’m McDonald’s at 5:04am posting a meme and getting breakfast.

I’m at the property at 6:15am, spraying deodorizer all over myself, I’m in my blind at 6:25am texting a friend in Montana about my target bear. I look up at 6:32am and yogi done crept in to my kill zone. I put the phone down, breathe, aim, wait for the presentation, pull the trigger, Pfffffft (cause I shoot suppressed), reset, don’t see him. Then I hear, “UHOOOOOOOOOOO………….UOOOOOOOO”. He’s got to be dead or wounded…crap….what if he’s in the brush in any direction. I didn’t bring Kota for potential tracking. So I just sit, and for whatever reason I think I need to reload, so I swap magazines and wait for ten minutes.

I creep out the blind as quiet as I can and walk the road hoping for some blood or sign where I last saw him….and there he was. The terrain was lower off the road and I just couldn’t seem him laying down from the blind. DEAD. One handloaded 300WM 180gr Accubond to the heart, through a rear femur and into the ham from 60yds. 2700ft lbs of energy apparently spun him around 180degrees.

My friend Andy got out of bed to come and help me recover and we got him loaded. Head over to his shop for gutting, skinning, and quartering.

I spent the rest of my day deboning and prepping for final processing.

It was a looong day on four hours of sleep without proper meals, no coffee (cause I don’t want to need a poop break at critical mass) and I didn’t even take my vitamins before going out…thinking it just wasn’t going to happen. I’m glad I went out EARLY

Congrats Dana! That's what all that prep is for. I've never spent time specifically bear hunting. I really wish I had the time. Sausage time?

Well mighty fine congratulations good sir. Our little coastie black bears eat well on berries so they taste pretty good. A lot better than what ever paper the tags are printed on.

Congrats! tasty vittles!

If you haven't cooked bear meat before I recommend having a good thermometer on hand.... The meat is very red and I absolutely killed the first steak I ever made - it was like 1" thick rubbery jerky!

Bear absolutely makes the best breakfast sausage I have ever had too! One of the smaller bears I shot we took a whole hindquarter and smoked it - that was bomb as well!

Congrats! I went about 4 years of eating tags and haven’t tried again. Makes me want to head out and find success!

Amazing!

I hope you can get the trail cam video from other neighbor.

Can’t wait to see the bear rug!

That's the right size to eat an pack out. I don't much care for the larger bears. No fun to pack alone. Don't forget to render the fat for pie crust an seasoning cast iron..any burnt grease use for waterproofing leather boots.
