Pre spawn is on!

Sat Jul 02, 2022 8:09 pm

Water was warmed up to 71° today and fish are moving up into the shallows, my boys wife and myself had a absolute blast with just bobber and worm today, 23 crappie, 13 bluegill and a few bonus fish

Some may gripe about taking pre spawn fish, but I assure you harts lake is FULL of stunted fish. Late season is when I usually take a big harvest, but the boys were having so much fun I let them keep a bunch today, will be a fine fish fry tomorrow for lunch. Little over 8 lbs of beautiful cleaned fish, some cleaned whole a bunch fillet and I kept the roe to fry up as well

Catch these from the shore or a boat? What did the crappie bite on?

From the boat, bobber and worm about 30" between bobber and worm. Several guys on the bank which is very small on harts lake and they were still catching some. Any small boat will do on this lake we were in the lilly pads all day just hitting the pockets and small channels, jigs were doing ok tipped with crappie nibbles as well, blue and white was the best jig of the day but worms did WAY better

Late season micro crank baits like rapalas and salmo are my go to for the big whopper crappie, and if I'm on alder lake I'll pickup a few nice small mouth doing the same thing. All make great fish and chips and fish sandwichs!

Which micros are you using?

Rapala micros are what I started with in perch bass and trout patterns, and now I bought a bunch of the bright color ones from salmo and they are doing pretty good

Its been ok off the columbia in the back water sloughs. Lots of bass, Few blu gill. For crappie i walk into the back yard and fish the ponds. Kids dont know how lucky they are yet to have a personal crappie pond.
